βοΈβοΈDeveloping mathematical language in P1
7th May 2026
π’ We used bead strings to represent numbers within 20 and had lots of fun counting carefully and spotting number patterns! π To make things even more challenging, we then used the bead strings to find one greater than and one fewer than each number. ββ
We are so proud of how our mathematical language is improving every day, with children confidently using words such as greater, fewer, before and after. ππ
You can help at home by practising counting forwards and backwards together, spotting numbers in everyday life, or asking quick questions such as “What is one more than 12?” or “What is one less than 17?” π‘π’ Even small maths chats at home can make a big difference to confidence and understanding! π‘π
