💻 Supporting ICT and Digital Skills at Home

Digital skills are an important part of the TransformED curriculum. Children are learning to use technology safely, creatively, and purposefully.

How parents can help:

Focus on purposeful screen time
Encourage apps and activities that promote learning and creativity rather than passive scrolling. Ask your child what they are using technology for.

Teach online safety
Remind children not to share personal information and to speak to an adult if something online worries them.

Create, don’t just consume
Encourage activities like drawing, coding, making videos, or researching topics of interest.

Set healthy boundaries
Agree on screen time limits, keep devices in shared spaces, and balance screen use with other activities.

👉 Key message: Technology should be a tool for learning and creativity, not just entertainment.

💻 Supporting ICT and Digital Skills at Home - learning outcomes

Understanding Learning Outcomes in the Primary Years (NI TransformED)

ICT in the TransformED curriculum is about more than just using devices. It focuses on developing digital capability, creativity, and safe participation in a digital world.

Key Learning Outcomes in ICT:

1. Using Technology Purposefully
Children will:

  • Select appropriate digital tools for tasks

  • Use technology to research, present, and organise information

  • Understand that technology is a tool, not just entertainment

👉 At home: Ask: “What are you using this device to help you do?”

2. Creating Digital Content
Children will:

  • Produce work using digital tools (presentations, videos, simple coding)

  • Combine text, images, and sound

  • Develop creativity through digital media

👉 At home: Encourage creating—slideshows, short videos, drawings, or coding apps.

3. Online Safety and Responsibility
Children will:

  • Understand how to stay safe online

  • Recognise risks and know when to seek help

  • Respect others and behave appropriately online

👉 At home: Have regular, open conversations about online experiences.

4. Managing Information
Children will:

  • Search for information effectively

  • Begin to question if information is reliable

  • Organise and present findings

👉 At home: Explore topics together and discuss what sources can be trusted.

What this means for parents

ICT is about helping children become:

  • Safe users of technology

  • Creative digital learners

  • Critical thinkers in an online world

👉 Key message: Encourage children to create, explore, and think critically, while setting clear boundaries for safe and balanced use.
