Measuring in P1 ✨️

13th May 2025
Mrs Peoples' class are measuring the length of the farm animals. We used non standard units to measure and recorded our results✨️

Here's an example of a fun and simple activity parents can do at home to support this learning:

"Measure with Socks!" Activity

What you need:

A clean sock (or a few of different sizes)

A notebook or paper to record measurements

A pencil

What to do:

1. Ask your child to choose a sock to use as their "measuring tool."

2. Together, pick objects around the house to measure — e.g., the length of the couch, the coffee table, the rug, or even a pet (if it stays still!).

3. Have your child lay the sock end-to-end along the object and count how many socks long it is.

4. Record each item and its measurement (e.g., "The table is 5 socks long").

5. Compare results: Which item was the longest? Which was the shortest?

Learning Outcome: This activity helps children understand length, comparison, and the idea of using units to measure — all while having fun and being hands-on.
