NIABF Anti-Bullying Week - (13-17 November)

10th Nov 2017

Hi Folks

Our children will be learning about anti-bullying during this term as part of the NIABF Anti-Bullying Week (13-17 November). This year’s theme is ‘All Equal, All Different, All Together” and aims to encourage children and young people to encourage and celebrate respect and kindness in diversity.

Our resources and activities will aim to encourage our children to develop their personal skills and provide them with an opportunity to understand the nature and complexities of bullying behaviour and how we can work together to end bullying.

The Northern Ireland Anti-Bullying Forum (NIABF) defines bullying as the repeated use of power by one or more persons intentionally to hurt, harm or adversely affect the rights and needs of another or others.

Prejudice Based Bullying

Bullying, no matter how it happens or why it happens, is always wrong.  To better understand the behaviour and our response, it can be helpful to think about different themes of bullying.  Some forms of prejudice based bullying include:

Racist Bullying

When a child or young person experiences bullying based on the colour of their skin, their ethnic or perceived ethnic origin or cultural or religious background

Sectarian Bullying

When a child or young person experiences bullying based on their real or perceived religious or cultural background within the context of the society in Northern Ireland

Disablist Bullying

When a child or young person experiences bullying based on a perceived or actual disability or special need

Homophobic Bullying

When a child or young person experiences bullying because they are lesbian, gay or bisexual, or because others think they are

Transphobic Bullying

When a child or young person experiences bullying because their real or perceived gender identity

LAC Bullying

When a child or young person experiences bullying because they are looked after by someone other than their parents

For more information we would recommend visiting the Northern Ireland Anti-Bullying Forum (NIABF) website http://www.endbullying.org.uk/ and consulting the Parent/Carer Toolkit.
