Outdoor learning ๐ŸŒป

23rd Mar 2026
Young Horticulturalists ๐ŸŒปOn Friday Mrs Glackins Year 2 class began to weed their planter. We used forks to loosen the soil. Some of the weeds had very long roots. When we have finished weeding we are going to plant sunflower seedlings and observe their growth ๐ŸŒปLots of outdoor learning taking place

Gardening is a brilliant activity to do with young children ๐ŸŒปit’s hands-on, calming, and packed with learning opportunities. Here’s why it’s so beneficial:

๐ŸŒฑ Supports physical development
Digging, planting, watering, and weeding all help build fine and gross motor skills, coordination, and strength.

๐Ÿง  Boosts learning and curiosity
Children naturally explore science through gardening ๐ŸŒฟ how plants grow, what they need to survive, and the role of weather, soil, and insects. It brings concepts like life cycles to life in a real way.

๐Ÿ’š Encourages responsibility
Looking after plants teaches children to care for something over time. They learn patience, routine, and the importance of nurturing living things.

๐Ÿ˜Š Supports wellbeing and mental health
Being outdoors and connecting with nature can reduce stress and improve mood. Gardening has a calming effect and can help children feel more relaxed and focused.

๐Ÿ“ Promotes healthy eating habits
When children grow their own fruits and vegetables, they’re much more likely to try and enjoy them!

๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ Develops language and communication
Gardening sparks conversation ๐Ÿ™‹‍โ™‚๏ธtalking about what they’re doing, describing textures, colours, and changes over time.

๐Ÿค Builds teamwork and social skills
Working together in a garden encourages sharing, cooperation, and problem-solving.

It’s a simple activity with huge benefits ๐Ÿ™Œand children absolutely love getting their hands dirty! ๐ŸŒผ
