Procedural writing ✍️ in P1
4th Mar 2026
😀 Another fantastic start to the day in St. Joseph’s as our Primary 1 children took part in a wonderful tasty session!
Today, our P1s have been exploring procedural writing ✍️ a type of writing that gives clear, step-by-step instructions on how to complete a task. Procedural writing is so important in the early years because it helps children learn how to sequence events, use clear language, and understand order and structure. When children physically carry out the task they are writing about, it deepens their understanding. They see that instructions must be clear and in the correct order for the outcome to be successful 🙌 otherwise things simply don’t work!
To bring their learning to life, our children made some very funky toast using biscotti, jam and fruit. They carefully followed each step: spreading, placing, arranging and creating their tasty masterpieces. This hands-on activity helped them connect spoken instructions, written language and physical action 🗣 a powerful combination for developing literacy skills.
There was great excitement (and very sticky fingers!) as the children proudly showed off their creations. Learning is always more meaningful when it is active, engaging and just a little bit delicious. What a brilliant way to start the day!
