Keeping Children Safe Online – A Partnership with Parents
As part of our ongoing commitment to safeguarding and promoting the wellbeing of our pupils, we would like to remind parents and carers of the important role they play in monitoring their child’s use of mobile phones and online platforms.
Many children now have access to smartphones and a wide range of apps and messaging services. While technology can be a fantastic tool for learning, creativity and staying connected with friends and family, it is essential that its use is supervised appropriately at home.
We encourage parents to regularly check their child’s phone and be aware of how it is being used. This includes monitoring the social media platforms they access, the websites they visit and the messaging services they use to communicate with others. Popular apps such as WhatsApp, Snapchat and TikTok, along with standard text messaging, allow children to share messages, images and videos instantly. It is important that parents understand how these platforms work and talk openly with their children about using them responsibly and safely.
Regular conversations about online behaviour, privacy and respectful communication can help children make positive choices when using technology. Parents may also wish to make use of parental controls and privacy settings on devices and apps to support safe usage.
We would encourage families to:
Check their child’s phone regularly.
Be aware of the apps and social media platforms they are using.
Monitor messaging services and online interactions.
Discuss the importance of kindness, respect and safety online.
Ensure privacy settings are appropriate for their child’s age.
By working together, school and home can help ensure that children enjoy the benefits of technology while remaining safe online.
If you have any concerns about your child’s online activity or would like further guidance on supporting safe internet use at home, please do not hesitate to contact the school.
