St Joseph's Cafe 👨‍🍳

4th Mar 2026
👨‍🍳As part of our Spring Has Sprung topic, the children in the Sunshine Room transformed their cupcakes into beautiful ladybirds! 🐞 This creative activity was rich in learning opportunities across the curriculum. While decorating with buttercream and chocolate chips, the children strengthened fine motor control, precision and hand–eye coordination. Our baking process incorporated meaningful mathematical learning as we carefully weighed ingredients, measuring 50g of butter and 250g of icing sugar, introducing the children to larger numbers, units of measurement and the concept of mass. We discussed how scales work and why accuracy matters in recipes, developing early scientific understanding of materials and change. As we counted and positioned the chocolate chip spots, we explored number recognition, pattern, symmetry and one-to-one correspondence. Linking to our spring theme, we talked about ladybirds as minibeasts, their habitats and their role in the garden ecosystem. A wonderful hands-on experience combining creativity, mathematical reasoning, scientific enquiry and seasonal learning!
