Supporting Your Child in Year 2 – Learning Through the TransformED Curriculum

Dear Parents/Carers,

Welcome to Year 2! This is an important year as children begin to build on the foundations from Year 1 and grow in confidence, independence, and ability. Within Northern Ireland’s TransformED curriculum, the focus continues to be on developing skills, understanding, and a love of learning.

In Year 2, learning remains active and engaging, but with a gradual increase in structure, independence, and challenge.

🌱 What does learning look like in Year 2?

Children in Year 2 learn through a balance of:

• Play-based and practical activities

• More structured learning tasks

• Opportunities to work independently and with others

There is a continued emphasis on developing:

• Confidence

• Communication skills

• Thinking and problem-solving

• Positive attitudes to learning

📖 Literacy (Language and Communication)

In Year 2, children begin to develop greater independence in reading and writing.

Your child will be learning to:

• Read more fluently and with understanding

• Recognise a wider range of words and phonics patterns

• Talk about what they have read and give simple opinions

• Write sentences with increasing detail and accuracy

• Use basic punctuation (capital letters, full stops, spacing)

How you can help at home:

• Continue daily reading and discuss the story

• Encourage your child to read aloud with expression

• Practise spelling common words in fun ways

• Support writing through simple tasks (notes, lists, short stories)

👉 The focus is on building fluency, understanding, and confidence.

🔢 Numeracy (Developing Maths Skills)

Year 2 children begin to deepen their understanding of number and start applying maths more independently.

Your child will be learning to:

• Add and subtract with increasing confidence

• Understand place value (tens and ones)

• Solve simple word problems

• Explore money, time, and measurement

• Recognise patterns and relationships in numbers

How you can help at home:

• Practise counting and simple sums in everyday situations

• Use money in real-life contexts (shops, role play)

• Ask your child to explain their thinking

• Play games that involve numbers and problem-solving

👉 The focus is on understanding how maths works, not just getting answers.

💻 ICT (Digital Skills and Awareness)

Children continue to develop their ability to use technology safely and purposefully.

Your child will be learning to:

• Use devices to complete simple tasks

• Create basic digital content (pictures, text, simple presentations)

• Begin searching for information with support

• Understand basic online safety rules

How you can help at home:

• Encourage creative use of technology (drawing, storytelling apps)

• Talk regularly about online safety

• Set clear and consistent screen time boundaries

• Ask your child about what they are doing online

👉 The focus is on purposeful use and early digital creativity.

💬 Personal Development & Wellbeing

Year 2 continues to support children in developing:

• Independence in daily tasks

• Confidence in sharing ideas

• Positive relationships with others

• Understanding of feelings and behaviour

You can support this by:

• Encouraging your child to try things independently

• Talking about emotions and problem-solving

• Praising effort and resilience

As children grow, your support remains essential. You can help by:

• Keeping routines consistent

• Encouraging independence in small tasks

• Supporting homework in short, manageable sessions

• Celebrating progress and effort

Year 2 is a year of growing independence and confidence. Through the TransformED curriculum, children are supported to become more capable learners who can begin to apply their skills with greater confidence.
