Supporting Your Child in Year 2 – Learning Through the TransformED Curriculum
Dear Parents/Carers,
Welcome to Year 2! This is an important year as children begin to build on the foundations from Year 1 and grow in confidence, independence, and ability. Within Northern Ireland’s TransformED curriculum, the focus continues to be on developing skills, understanding, and a love of learning.
In Year 2, learning remains active and engaging, but with a gradual increase in structure, independence, and challenge.

Children in Year 2 learn through a balance of:

📖 Literacy (Language and Communication)
In Year 2, children begin to develop greater independence in reading and writing.
Your child will be learning to:

Recognise a wider range of words and phonics patterns

Talk about what they have read and give simple opinions

Write sentences with increasing detail and accuracy

Use basic punctuation (capital letters, full stops, spacing)
How you can help at home:

Year 2 children begin to deepen their understanding of number and start applying maths more independently.
