Supporting Your Child in Year 3 – Learning Through the TransformED Curriculum

Dear Parents/Carers,

Welcome to Year 3! This is an exciting stage as children move into Key Stage 1’s later phase, where they begin to build greater independence, resilience, and confidence in their learning.

Within Northern Ireland’s TransformED curriculum, the focus continues to be on developing skills, understanding, and the ability to apply learning in meaningful ways.

🌱 What does learning look like in Year 3?

In Year 3, children experience:

  • A balance of practical and structured learning

  • More opportunities for independent work

  • Increased focus on thinking skills and problem-solving

Children are encouraged to:

  • Take responsibility for their learning

  • Ask questions and explore ideas

  • Work collaboratively with others

📖 Literacy (Language and Communication)

In Year 3, children continue to develop as independent readers and writers, with a stronger focus on understanding and expression.

Your child will be learning to:

  • Read with greater fluency and expression

  • Understand and discuss a wider range of texts

  • Identify key ideas, characters, and themes

  • Write longer pieces with more detail and structure

  • Use punctuation more accurately (capital letters, full stops, question marks, some commas)

  • Spell common and topic-related words more confidently

How you can help at home:

  • Encourage regular reading and discuss the text

  • Ask deeper questions like “Why do you think that happened?”

  • Support writing through stories, diaries, or simple reports

  • Practise spelling and sentence building in fun ways

👉 The focus is on understanding, expression, and developing independence.

🔢 Numeracy (Developing Mathematical Thinking)

In Year 3, children strengthen their number skills and begin to tackle more challenging problem-solving tasks.

Your child will be learning to:

  • Add and subtract with larger numbers

  • Understand place value more deeply

  • Begin to explore multiplication and division

  • Solve word problems using different strategies

  • Work with time, money, and measurement

  • Interpret simple data (charts and graphs)

How you can help at home:

  • Practise number facts (addition, subtraction, early times tables)

  • Use maths in real-life contexts (shopping, cooking, time)

  • Encourage your child to explain their thinking

  • Play games that involve strategy and problem-solving

👉 The focus is on developing confidence and flexible thinking in maths.

💻 ICT (Digital Skills and Creativity)

Children continue to build their digital skills, with more opportunities to use technology creatively and independently.

Your child will be learning to:

  • Use a range of digital tools to create and present work

  • Combine text, images, and sometimes sound

  • Begin simple coding or sequencing activities

  • Search for information with increasing independence

  • Understand how to stay safe online

How you can help at home:

  • Encourage purposeful use of devices (research, creating, learning apps)

  • Talk about online safety and responsible behaviour

  • Support creative activities like making presentations or videos

  • Set clear boundaries around screen time

👉 The focus is on creativity, independence, and safe use of technology.

💬 Personal Development & Wellbeing

Year 3 supports children in becoming more independent and socially aware.

Children will:

  • Build confidence in sharing ideas

  • Develop teamwork and cooperation skills

  • Learn to manage emotions and challenges

  • Take increasing responsibility for their actions

You can support this by:

  • Encouraging independence at home

  • Talking through challenges and solutions

  • Promoting a positive attitude to learning

🏡 Supporting Learning at Home

At this stage, children benefit from:

  • A consistent routine for homework and reading

  • Encouragement to work independently

  • Opportunities to talk about their learning

  • Praise for effort, not just results
