Supporting Your Child in Year 3 – Learning Through the TransformED Curriculum
Dear Parents/Carers,
Welcome to Year 3! This is an exciting stage as children move into Key Stage 1’s later phase, where they begin to build greater independence, resilience, and confidence in their learning.
Within Northern Ireland’s TransformED curriculum, the focus continues to be on developing skills, understanding, and the ability to apply learning in meaningful ways.
🌱 What does learning look like in Year 3?
In Year 3, children experience:

Children are encouraged to:

📖 Literacy (Language and Communication)
In Year 3, children continue to develop as independent readers and writers, with a stronger focus on understanding and expression.
Your child will be learning to:

Read with greater fluency and expression

Understand and discuss a wider range of texts

Identify key ideas, characters, and themes

Write longer pieces with more detail and structure

Use punctuation more accurately (capital letters, full stops, question marks, some commas)

Spell common and topic-related words more confidently
How you can help at home:

Encourage regular reading and discuss the text

Ask deeper questions like “Why do you think that happened?”

Support writing through stories, diaries, or simple reports

Practise spelling and sentence building in fun ways
