Supporting Your Child in Year 6 – Learning Through the TransformED Curriculum

Dear Parents/Carers,

Welcome to Year 6, the final year of primary school! This is a significant stage in your child’s education as they prepare for the transition to post-primary school. Through Northern Ireland’s TransformED curriculum, learning focuses on helping children become independent, resilient, and confident learners who can apply their skills in a wide range of contexts.

Year 6 is about consolidation, challenge, and preparing for the next step.

🌱 What does learning look like in Year 6?

In Year 6, children experience:

  • More advanced and extended learning tasks

  • A strong emphasis on independence and responsibility

  • Opportunities to apply learning across subjects

  • Preparation for transition to post-primary education

Children are encouraged to:

  • Think critically and justify their ideas

  • Work independently and manage their own learning

  • Reflect on progress and set goals

  • Apply skills in real-life and unfamiliar contexts

📖 Literacy (Language and Communication)

In Year 6, children are expected to be fluent, confident, and analytical readers and writers.

Your child will be learning to:

  • Read and interpret a wide range of complex texts

  • Analyse themes, characters, and author intent

  • Summarise, compare, and evaluate information

  • Write for different purposes and audiences (narrative, persuasive, report, explanation)

  • Use grammar, punctuation, and vocabulary with increasing accuracy and sophistication

  • Plan, draft, edit, and improve writing independently

How you can help at home:

  • Encourage reading of varied texts (books, newspapers, online articles)

  • Discuss opinions and ask for evidence-based answers

  • Support longer writing tasks and encourage editing

  • Talk about meaning, inference, and interpretation

👉 The focus is on critical thinking, depth of understanding, and clear communication.

🔢 Numeracy (Applying and Extending Mathematical Understanding)

Year 6 numeracy focuses on mastery, reasoning, and application of mathematical skills.

Your child will be learning to:

  • Secure fluency in all four operations with large numbers

  • Confidently use times tables and related facts

  • Solve complex, multi-step word problems

  • Work with fractions, decimals, and percentages interchangeably

  • Use ratio, proportion, and measurement in context

  • Interpret and analyse data using a range of representations

  • Explain and justify mathematical reasoning clearly

How you can help at home:

  • Practise quick recall of number facts and times tables

  • Use real-life maths (budgets, cooking, travel time, shopping)

  • Encourage your child to explain how and why they reached an answer

  • Use puzzles and reasoning activities to build problem-solving skills

👉 The focus is on fluency, reasoning, and applying maths confidently in different situations.

💻 ICT (Digital Literacy and Responsibility)

In Year 6, children use technology with increasing independence and responsibility, preparing them for post-primary learning.

Your child will be learning to:

  • Use digital tools to research, create, and present work effectively

  • Apply coding and computational thinking skills

  • Evaluate online information for reliability and bias

  • Understand digital footprint and long-term online impact

  • Collaborate and communicate using digital platforms safely

How you can help at home:

  • Encourage purposeful and project-based use of technology

  • Discuss online safety, privacy, and responsible behaviour

  • Talk about misinformation and how to check sources

  • Set balanced and consistent screen time boundaries

👉 The focus is on becoming safe, responsible, and capable digital citizens.

💬 Personal Development & Wellbeing

Year 6 supports children in becoming resilient, independent, and prepared for transition.

Children will:

  • Take full responsibility for organising their learning

  • Develop strategies for managing pressure and change

  • Work effectively in teams and independently

  • Reflect on strengths, challenges, and goals

You can support this by:

  • Encouraging independence and organisation at home

  • Supporting positive coping strategies for change

  • Talking openly about transition to secondary school

  • Reinforcing confidence and self-belief

🏫 Preparing for Transition to Post-Primary School

A key focus in Year 6 is helping children feel ready for the move ahead. This includes:

  • Developing independence in learning

  • Strengthening core literacy and numeracy skills

  • Building confidence and resilience

  • Encouraging responsibility and organisation

🏡 Supporting Learning at Home

At this stage, your support makes a significant difference. You can help by:

  • Maintaining consistent routines

  • Encouraging independent study habits

  • Supporting revision and consolidation activities

  • Talking positively about transition and change
